McKay was a painter and photographer, and a pioneer of 1960s psychedelic light shows in San Francisco. For 3 years he was the official light show artist working with Jefferson Airplane. He created hundreds of light shows in the SF Bay Area and on tour, for bands including the Grateful Dead, Doors, and Jimi Hendrix. His light show work influenced Joshua White and other artists.
