HY HIRSH (1911-1961) - Artist Biography

Photographer and filmmaker Hy Hirsh led a restless and unconventional life. He worked in Los Angeles and San Francisco before creative and economic opportunities lured him to Europe in 1955. He died in Paris at age 49 under clouded circumstances. When his estate was released, much of his life’s work in film and photography went missing.

Combined images became integral to Hirsh’s still photography. Sometimes he utilized double exposure, other times he overlapped separate negatives. In Europe he employed both approaches to produce a series of fashion spreads for Elle, overlaying the image of a model with a floral motif or combining a model’s image with that of a landscape turned on its side. (excerpts from Dennis Reed’s biography)
