Edmund Teske (1911-1996) is known for his experiments in solarization, chemical toning, and combining printing. Born in Chicago, he studied at the Huttle Art Studio. In 1936 he had a Taliesin fellowship under Frank Lloyd Wright, and later taught at the New Bauhaus Institute of Design in Chicago. After teaching, he worked as an assistant to Berenice Abbott in New York, then moved to Los Angeles where he worked for Paramount Pictures. Beginning in the mid-1940s Teske was heavily influenced by the teachings of Hindu Swami Prabhavananda, learning about Hindu mythology and symbolism. He had a studio designed by Wright for the oil heiress, Aline Barnsdell, which she invited him to use. During this time, while pursuing his own work, he met a number of artists and filmmakers including Man Ray and James Whitney.
His work has been shown at the Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art New York, Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Pasadena Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, and numerous other institutions.
